Seven named to committee reviewing council pay
A new citizen committee has been formed to review councillors’ salary.
On Monday, councillors received a report naming the seven people who were selected to be part of the committee. There was an application process and interviews were conducted earlier this summer.
Natalie Garnett, the deputy city clerk, said there are no women on the committee because all 11 applicants were men.
Here are the committee members, approved by councillors on Monday night:
Claude Dufresne
Wayne Godward
Daniel Kivari
Dave McFadden
Dan Maloney
Garth Wedlock
Jeff Westlake
The committee’s job will be to ensure local politicians are being properly paid.
The idea was proposed by Coun. Diane Therrien in the spring.
She said that if Peterborough wants more candidates to run for municipal office - particularly women and younger people - then council needs to ensure the pay is fair.
The idea would be to have citizens survey other cities in Ontario and then communicate their findings with councillors and city staff.
