Bronze still summer’s hot look: makeup artist

- ALEESHA HARRIS Aharris@postmedia.com

When it comes to summer beauty, the buck starts and stops with bronzer. And summer 2016 is no exception.

Bronzed beauty is still the most in-demand element of an on-season look. But there are a few application elements and even hues (think teal for eyes and gold for lips) that serve as a nice twist to the tried-and-true bronzed-beauty allure.

Alan Pan, the international makeup artist for Estée Lauder chatted with The Province during a recent visit to Vancouver, where he shared how to get flawless skin despite the heat, talked teal and revealed his hottest lip hue of the season.

Q What is the biggest beauty trend of this summer?

A One of the key looks when it comes to summer is it’s all about the bronze.

Q The heat becomes a huge factor in the summer making makeup seem to melt off. Is there a way to combat this?

A Double-wear foundation is a must-have for the season because it is going to last you all day long, which is 15-hour wear. To protect your skin from the sun, I recommend the Advanced Night Repair Serum ... and I combine both of them together to create an amazing sensation.

Q What is the benefit of mixing the two together?

A Mixing the two instantly gives your skin further hydration, which we all need at this time of the year. On top of that, when you mix the two it also gives you that extra glow.

Q Do you have any application tips for foundation?

A I like to start at the centre of the face because that is the area of the face where we need the most coverage. When I apply foundation, I always like to apply in downward (strokes), because we all have facial hair. And you want to imagine when you sunbathe, it actually bleaches the hair so you can see it at certain angles. By applying it downward, it actually flattens the hair.

Q What are the biggest trends in eyeshadow shades for summer?

A When it comes to eye makeup for the season, we obviously want to have a bronzy finish. But the key colour I love to use is an aqua colour. I dab it into the middle of the eye outward and it instantly creates a lovely finish. Rather than just sticking to a traditional brown colour, which is so good for day-to-day application, a touch of blue instantly enhances.

Q Are brows still big for summer?

A When it comes to eyebrows, I love a messy eyebrow. It looks so natural, almost like you don’t care, you were just born with it. I use our eyebrow volumizing product to instantly add volume, help shape and keep the brow in place. It’s very easy to use, particularly for those who don’t have the confidence to apply an eyebrow pencil, this will be such a great choice.

Q What about bronzers? Any application secrets to ensure you don’t look too faux?

A When we talk about summer, bronzing is everything. And while a lot of people use bronzer, sometimes it is a little overloaded. All you need to do is imagine drawing a three or ‘e’ on the side of your face, dab your brush into the bronzing powder and follow the bone structure of your face. Just follow your forehead, cheekbone and jawline. And I always say don’t forget under your chin area because that is where the sun doesn’t shine, so we usually have white patching around that area.
