Rowers earn seven golds

Peterborou­gh Rowing Club rowers also bring home two silver, three bronze from the Row Ontario championsh­ips held in Welland

Peterborou­gh Rowing Club came home with seven gold medals, two silver and three bronze at the Row Ontario championsh­ips in Welland on the weekend.

PRC placing seventh overall in total medal count out of 33 clubs.

A triple gold medal winner was Grace VandenBroe­k who swept the under-17 sculling events winning the single, joining Roz Shepherd in the double and teammates Brianna Tombs, Shepherd and Avril Vanderpost in the quad.

Dan Bullock won the U21 elite single race and was a member of the winning senior men’s quad

Under-23 lightweigh­t rowers Anders Fish and teammate Dayton Kelly won the double and teamed up with brothers Sam and Matt Lapum to win the U23 lightweigh­t four.

The senior men’s quad was won by James Myer, Matt Seaby, Bullock and Charlie Murphy.

Silver medals were won by the U23 women’s quad (Noemi Marcoux, Lauren Temperley, Jess Lenters, Clair Lapum) and the senior lightweigh­t men’s quad (Matt Lapum, Sam Lapum, Kelly, Fish).

Bronze medals were won by the U23 men’s quad (Bullock, Murphy, Mark Moyer, Matt Halopien), the senior men’s double (Seaby, Myer) and U23 lightweigh­ts double (Matt and Sam Lapum).

PRC head coach Jack Lapum and junior developmen­t coach Jessica Rheaume, were pleased with the results.

“Despite the severe heat the athletes performed well,” Lapum said. “There is now a week to get ready for the Canadian Henley where the crews will meet the best from across the country and the States.”

On Saturday the Peterborou­gh Wolverines rep football teams completed their OFC regular seasons with two of the three teams qualifying for the post season playoffs.

The Sr. Varsity and Jr. Varsity squads will be moving ahead while the Bantams did not advance.

The Sr. Varsity Wolverines were defeated 51-3 by the Burlington Stampeders, who are possibly the best Sr. Varsity team in the OFC.

The Wolverines record is 6-2 and they have maintained a second place finish in the Ramsay Conference and will now host the North Halton Crimson Tide, the third place team in the first round of the playoffs.

The game will be Saturday with a 5 p.m. kickoff at the Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School Field. The Wolverines are looking forward to this game and their participat­ion in the drive to win their conference and go the OFC championsh­ip in Hamilton on Aug. 13.

The Jr. Varsity Wolverines travelled to Guelph and finished their regular season with a convincing 3414 victory over the Jr. Gryphons.

The Wolverines have finished in third place with a 5-3 record and will travel to Georgetown this weekend to face the second-place North Halton Crimson Tide. The game will be played at the Georgetown District High School with a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Scoring for the Wolverines was Keegan Crough with 18 points on 3 field goals, a 40 yard TD run and converting 3 convert kicks. Kyle Milburn and Kyle Cooper each scored a TD with Graeme Heighway scoring two singles off punts. The team recorded a team safety as well. The Wolverines look forward to their game with North Halton who they defeated 1710 in the regular season.

The Bantam Wolverines were in London to face a strong Forest City Thunderbir­ds team falling 47-14, thus bringing the Bantam season to an end. The Bantam Wolverines finish with a 3-5 record.

The Wolverines have played against several strong teams this season and have gained some valuable experience for the future. Scoring for the Wolverines with a 70-yard TD run was Mack McFarlane who has had a great season. Isaac Clark scored a TD on a 90yard kick off return and the Wolverines recorded a team safety.

If the Sr. and Jr. Varsity Wolverines can win their respective Ramsay Conference divisions they would advance to the OFC Championsh­ips in Hamilton on Aug. 13.
