Tractor-trailer hauling hay catches fire on Hwy. 401
PORT HOPE -- A tractor-trailer hauling hay caught fire on in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 around 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Motorists spotted the fire along the highway and the driver pulled over just east of the Northumberland County Road 28 ramp to the eastbound lanes.
The entire unit, cab and trailer, was destroyed by the fire and firefighters worked for several hours extinguishing the trailer load of hay.
Firefighters also had to contend with a fuel leak on the cab of the trailer.
Traffic was backed up for several kilometres as several lanes of the highway were shut down.
There was no word on the cause of the fire and the driver told Postmedia Network he was heading from the Kitchener area to Cornwall.
