Boxer looking forward to fighting on home soil

Cody Crowley can’t wait to fight on home soil again.

The Douro native, who sports an 8-0 professional boxing record with four knockouts, is scheduled to fight at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre on Sept. 24. He is slated to fight Argentina’s Marcelo Fabian Bzowski who is 8-2-1 with zero knockouts, in an eight-round welterweight bout.

Crowley, who lives and trains in Las Vegas, has fought only once in Canada on June 27, 2015 in Ajax. He had another fight in Toronto fall through at the last minute.

“I was getting my hands taped in the back room,” said Crowley. “The hardest thing for me was it was a letdown for the people who had come out to support me. People put up money to come to these fights and drove all the way to Toronto to see me and were in the building. It doesn’t make the promoters look bad, it makes me look bad.”

Crowley says he’s fighting a boxer with similar experience.

“I’ve seen a couple of his fights on the internet. He’s another southpaw so it will be good to fight another left-handed fighter like myself. Some people find it tricky, but I actually like it,” he said.

Crowley hasn’t fought since a May 14 unanimous decision over Corey McKants in Maryland. His trainer Ibn Cason wanted to spend some extra time in the gym working on a few things.

“He really wanted me to work on being more of a professional,” said Crowley. “It’s one thing to be able to beat on these guys like in my last fight. I fought a very tough veteran who had a lot of fights and a lot of experience. I was able to beat up on him for six rounds but I wasn’t able to take it to the next level where I got him out of there. For these guys who have a lot of experience it’s easy for them to brace for shots and survive. We’ve really tried to work on sitting down on my punches and making my punches count, rather than a volume of punches. Placing my punches better and breaking the guy down.”

He says it takes years of practice to get to the level he wants to reach but he’s anxious to see how he’s progressed in those areas they’ve been working on.

“I’m only 23 so my strength is just starting to come,” he said. “It’s just going to take more and more experience, but I feel we’re in a better position.”

At the same time, Crowley hopes to put on a good show for those family and friends who make the trek to Mississauga.

“I don’t want to just go out there and look good from a boxer’s standpoint. I also want to entertain,” said Crowley. “There’s a fine line I have to walk.”

Crowley has a block of tickets available for the bout ranging from $30 to $100. To get tickets text or call his mother Julie Crowley at 705-927-3265.
