Long-time resident disappointed

-

I have lived in Peterborough for all but three of my 74 years.

I have seen city councils come and go, some good, some not so good. But I have never seen the likes of what we have now. First, lets look at the top, the mayor and the police controversy.

Mayor Daryl Bennett wanted the Lakefield seat on the police services board. We have seen how that escalated with the blame being shifted to the police chief and deputy, ignoring the role played by a very dictatorial mayor. Second, councils role in the PDI affair.

Council again has ignored those who elected them. People across the province are choosing eating or hydro. User rates have increased steadily since 2011. What will happen to prices when PDI is sold ? Third, look at Ashburnham Dr. and the mess created by being too cheap to extend the culverts on the second creek like the one near the park. Why not extend these culverts and complete the widening instead of creating a bottle neck and future problems? Fourth, fire halls are located in the city so as to offer a quick response to emergencies. Not so with our paramedic service. They need a west end base, so they are going to rent a building and waste more taxpayers money. It only makes good financial sense to house the ambulances in fire halls.

Fifth, The Parkway. The need for this roadway should be obvious to anyone with a set of car keys. Look at the destruction of perfectly good homes on Chemong Rd. that may not have been necessary had the parkway been built. Unfortunately, this council seems more concerned with putting a leash on cats than what is of real importance. I suppose their next bylaw will be to prohibit birds from singing before 7 a.m.
