A GLORIOUS BALL DROPPING CEREMONY AT LAKERS GAME
Peterborough professional wrestler Bobby Roode waves to the crowd after dropping the ball before the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers and Six Nations Chiefs Major Series Lacrosse Final Game 5 on Tuesday night at the Memorial Centre Born and raised in Peterborough, Roode recently joined the WWE’s NXT brand after leaving the TNA Impact Wrestling promotion earlier this year after 12 years where he had been the world heavyweight champion twice and the tag team champion multiple times. Roode made his in-ring television NXT debut at the NXT Takeover Brooklyn 2 event a week ago. His NXT entrance music, Glorious Domination, was No. 1 last week on the iTunes Soundtracks sales chart and in the Top 100 of the iTunes sales chart for all singles in the United Kingdom.
Peterborough’s Thomas Hoggarth did not win the Minto Cup he so desired but did win a consolation prize on Monday night.
Hoggarth’s Orangeville Northmen lost 6-5 in overtime to the Coquitlam Adanacs in the fifth and deciding game of the Minto Cup final in Langley, B.C.
In the post-tournament awards presentations Hoggarth was named the winner of the Jim Bishop Memorial Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Hoggarth scored a goal in the final game while his former junior A Lakers’ teammate Matt Gilray hit two goal posts.
Peterborough native and former Laker Kyle Sorensen was an assistant coach for the Adanacs. It was Coquitlam’s second Minto Cup in franchise history. They’ve reached the final six of the last seven years.
“It’s nice to finally get rewarded,” stated Sorensen, in a Canadian Lacrosse Association press release. “It’s nice to see these guys with smiles on their faces and to know it’s all worth it. It took every single one of them to win this Minto Cup.”
WLA final ongoing
The Maple Ridge Burrards held a 2-1 series lead in the WLA final heading into Game 4 Tuesday night at home. A final score was not available at press time.
The Burrards took Game 3 of the series 14-11 in overtime Sunday night in Victoria, outscoring the Shamrocks 3-0 in the fourth period. The Shamrocks are the defending Mann Cup champions and three-time WLA champions. The series winner will travel east for the Mann Cup.
Roode awakening
WWE NXT star and Peterborough native Bobby Roode performed the ceremonial faceoff prior to Game 5. Roode is a longtime friend and former schoolmate of Lakers assistant coach Tracey
Kelusky. He got a warm reception from the Memorial Centre audience. Roode joined the WWE earlier this year.
Roster notes
Holden Cattoni and Jake Fox returned to the Lakers lineup for Game 4. Cattoni took the spot of John Grant Jr. who had work commitments in Denver. Bryce Sweeting was scratched as the Lakers elected to go with four right hand shots at forward rather than an extra defender like in Game 4. Joel Matthews was unavailable due to work commitments.
