Social assistance cheques returning to mail delivery

- EXAMINER STAFF

Social assistance cheques are going to be mailed again now that a postal workers’ strike has been ruled out.

A settlement has been reached between Canada Post and its union, meaning the city can now start mailing social assistance cheques again.

With the threat of a mail strike looming, the city held some end-of-August cheques and arranged for recipients to pick them up in person.

If you need to pick up a cheque, you still can do so at 178 Charlotte St. during the following hours:

On Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

On Friday 4:30 p.m.

If you would prefer to have your cheque immediately put in the mail for you, contact your worker.

Any cheques that haven’t been picked up at the end of the day on Friday will be given to Canada Post for delivery (which takes up to three business days). Also note:

Pay-direct cheques to landlords from 8:30 a.m. to and utility providers will be available for pickup until the end of the day Friday, unless other arrangements are made.

Daily Ontario Works cheques will be mailed unless other arrangements are made.

If you usually receive payments through direct deposit, you will receive your money – and the statement will be mailed.

Anyone picking up cheques in person will need proper ID such as a birth certificate, health card or driver’s licence.
