Mitsubishi planning an all-electric, subcompact crossover

- NICK TRAGIANIS DRIVING.CA Bloomberg

Mitsubishi is looking to give its lineup a boost with a new, all-electric subcompact crossover.

Speaking at an event in Australia, Mitsubishi chief executive Osamu Masuko said the company is working on a small SUV with a range of about 400 kilometres, Motoring reported. It said the new vehicle is due out by 2020.

Further details are sparse, but word on the street is that the design will probably be inspired by the eX Concept.

Not only that, the electric crossover in question — which has yet to be named — will have all-wheel drive and feature today’s seemingly requisite autonomous driving capabilities and a full list of active safety features.

Look for it to compete with the likes of the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3, among others. Sounds a lot like an all-electric RVR replacement to us.

Pretty soon, you’ll soon be able to buy a Tesla Model S that does zeroto-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds

Tesla is adding new versions of its Model S and Model X cars, which will have a more powerful battery pack. The changes will make the Model S the world’s quickest production car, according to Tesla. The new battery pack will also give the Model S a range of just over 500 kilometres on a single charge.

Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, is trying to appeal to sports car enthusiasts with the new Model S P100D with a 100 kWh battery pack, which in Ludicrous mode can go from a standstill to 60 mph (about 100 km/h) in 2.5 seconds, compared with 2.8 seconds for the P90D Ludicrous version.

The P100D Ludicrous upgrade will cost US$10,000 for customers who have ordered a P90D Ludicrous but haven’t yet taken delivery. The upgrade charge will be US$20,000 for owners who already have that vehicle type.

Tesla has been gradually upgrading the power delivered by its batteries and the performance of its cars for several years. Musk first unveiled models with Ludicrous mode last year.

The heavier Model X P100D with Ludicrous mode can get to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and go 465 km on a single charge, Musk said.
