A vacant industrial building located at one of the city’s key intersections has been sold.

The former United Canadian Malt building, which closed last year, has been sold to Evergreen Leasing Inc., a company owned by J.R. and David McGee of Peterborough.

The art deco-style building, located at Lansdowne and Park streets, directly across from Home Depot, is on an eight-acre parcel.

In a news release, Evergreen Leasing indicates it is about to begin working with city planning, building and zoning staff before developing the property.

The owners will seek to have it zoning changes from industrial to commercial.

The plan calls for a new “prestige development that complements the neighbourhood in terms of tenants and design,” the release states.

The formal address of the building is 843 Park St. S.

United Canadian Malt closed Aug. 2, 2015 after the CP Rail Line used to ship grain to the plant stopped running.

The company made malt extracts and sweeteners from barley, wheat, oats and rice for cereal, bread, vinegar and beer.
