Cobourg man arrested in graffiti spree
An 18-year-old Cobourg man was arrested Sunday following an investigation into a spree of graffiti in Peterborough city and county and across Northumberland County. The vandalism was first noted in the Brighton area of Northumberland County in February, police said, and the Northumberland OPP street response team began investigation. Damage was committed in the Smithfield area of Brighton involving several road signs, a vehicle, a building, a Canada Post mailbox and Smithfield Public School, police said There was more vandalism in Port Hope at a business on Northumberland County Road 28, along with damage in Cobourg and Peterborough city and county, police said. The total estimate of repair costs is in excess of $20,000, police said. An 18-year-old Cobourg man was arrested Sunday and charged with 12 counts of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance. He was released from custody and is to appear in court in October. Northumberland OPP are not releasing his name.
