Five members of the Peterborough Senior Hockey Club are being inducted into the 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame in November.

Phil McKeating, Alex Ramsay, Chic Roberton, Bill Boyd and Hugh Cameron are all being honoured at a ceremony in Gatineau, Que. on Nov. 19.

Their names will be among this year’s 30 inductees added to the plaque that hangs in the University of Ottawa Sports Complex.

The five men were recognized at the Peterborough Senior Hockey Club’s season launch at the Evinrude Centre on Tuesday.

McKeating, 84, was one of the local club’s founding members 26 years ago.

He played defence up until last year, deciding to call it quits this year.

“I finally realized that I’m done,” he said.

Though he’s not playing anymore, the Peterborough resident is being recognized as a builder in the hockey community.

He thought the idea of being inducted was fun.

“It’s kind of flattering to remember us fellas who are more than octogenarians, although we don’t believe ourselves to be that,” said McKeating.

Ramsay, 82, has played with the club as a forward for 20 years.

He used to play as a kid, then took a break for about 35 years, until he joined the senior league.

“I didn’t realize how bad I was, it took me two years to realize it, timing and everything is terrible after 35 years,” said Ramsay.

The Young ’s Point resident said he appreciates that you have to be in shape to play hockey at his age.

“You have to work at it and that makes you feel good,” he said.

As for being inducted, Ramsay wasn’t really bothered either way.

“It’s just nice the fact that I’m still playing. That’s what we all say, the fact that we can still play, we’re really lucky,” he said.

Roberton learned he was being inducted in November when he arrived at Tuesday’s launch.

“It’s a very nice surprise,” said Roberton, who’ll be 80 in December.

He’s played in the league for 26 years as a centre.

Roberton has played hockey most of his life, taking a break for a few years in his 30s.

“It’s been fun since I was five years old, just a little boy at heart, I guess,” said Roberton, a Peterborough resident.

Boyd, 84, has played as a defenceman with the club for about 25 years.

The Lakefield resident has also penned two books about hockey.

He wasn’t able to attend Tuesday’s launch.

Cameron, 82, drives in from Woodview to play with the club twice a week.

He’s plays with the league as a centre, joining about 10 years ago.

Though Cameron is honoured to be recognized, he’d prefer if it were for another reason.

“I’m pretty proud, but in a way, it’s not because you’re good, it’s because you’re old – it’d be better if it were because you were good,” Cameron said.
