Nothing wrong with ‘Merry Christmas’
Re: “Holiday traditions: Different but alike,” Dec. 24a
I read with interest your article on replacing the term “Christmas” with the words “Holiday Season”. The arguments used varied from the pluralistic make up of our culture to the so called “connection with Christianity and pagan celebrations… with roots in Northern Europe, also binds us to the light… ”
It is right and good to remember that Canada has a Christian heritage, upon which this country is built. That is a historical fact. Those who come to Canada are able to do so because of the magnanimity and generosity of Canada as a people. That, however, does not mean that we jettison our Christian faith and traditions out of political correctness to satisfy the demands of a shrill minority. Christmas is Christmas; we greet one another with “Merry Christmas.”
A small number of people choose to take offense at this. It is not religious minorities who are so offended, by the way, but the secular minded individuals in government, education and the media who would like to eradicate Jesus Christ from the public domain and our cultural discourse. They have their agenda; to promote their values and ever changing relativist truths, such as the notion that the light of Christianity is really a culturally conditioned belief.
We, Christians, beg to differ: We stand on the words of The Son of God who said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8.12) The light of the Star in the heavens led the 3 Magi to Christ who was born in Bethlehem.
We celebrate His Light: we share it with others this time of the year as part of our faith; part of our heritage and as an expression of God’s “good will toward all people.”
Merry Christmas everyone, Aris Metaxakis Wildlark Dr.
