Missing snowmobiler’s body found on Buckhorn Lake
The body of a 52-year-old snowmobiler was pulled Friday afternoon from Buckhorn Lake near Scollard Bay.
John Bernard Shaw, 52, of Ennismore, had been reported missing after he failed to return home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday as planned after taking a ride on the lake, Peterborough County OPP said.
His body was then taken to the Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit at the Forensic Services and Coroners Complex in Toronto for an autopsy.
Selwyn Township firefighters and OPP officers began searching for him around 9 p.m. Thursday.
A search and rescue helicopter from CFB Trenton joined the search overnight but did not find him.
The search was in the area of Buckhorn Lake between Gannon’s Narrows and Emerald Isle.
On Friday an OPP helicopter joined the search and spotted the snowmobiler in the water near Scollard Bay.
Officers from the OPP underwater search and recovery unit were called in and recovered the body just before 3:30 p.m. Friday
It’s the second snowmobile fatality on lake ice this year in Selwyn Township.
Jerry Douglas Eadie, 51, of Douro-Dummer Township died Jan. 11 while snowmobiling on Stoney Lake near Hell’s Gate.
And late Friday night, Selwyn firefighters and OPP officers were called to the area of Birch Island Road and Cedarwood Lane for a search and rescue after another snowmobiler went through the ice on Chemong Lake.
