Freezing rain warning in effect
All of Peterborough and the Kawarthas is under a freezing rain warning from Environment Canada with freezing rain expected Tuesday afternoon and night.
The freezing rain warning also in effect for all of southern Ontario.
“The system is very large,” said Geoff Coulson of the weather office in Toronto.
“I think there will likely be impacts on the evening commute on Tuesday as the freezing rain gets going, even though it will be in the second half of the trip home.”
On Wednesday, the system will add some snow but there may still be ice underneath it that formed overnight.
“The main concern is this long period of freezing rain from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning,” he said.
In Peterborough and the Kawarthas, the freezing rain is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon and last for several hours before changing to rain in the evening, according to Environment Canada.
A few centimetres of snow and ice pellets are likely before the freezing rain begins.
As a result, azardous winter travelling conditions are expected.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” the freezing rain warning from Environment Canada states.
“Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays. Road closures are possible. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.
“Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in subzero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.”
