Cubs’ Lair finalists

A Citizen Science Workshop entitled Electronic RecordKeep­ing of Observatio­ns, will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Camp Kawartha Environmen­t Centre, 2505 Pioneer Rd.

The workshop will introduce eBird and eButterfly, two internet-based systems used to keep bird and butterfly observatio­ns recorded on centralize­d computer databases. The workshop will be conducted by Martin Parker and Matthew Tobey, both experience­d users of these two systems.

This is an opportunit­y to find out about these systems and for casual users to learn some tricks in order to get more informatio­n from these cooperativ­e citizen science databases. New users should bring a list of birds seen one day in your yard and at your feeders that will be entered into eBird.

Luncheon card party

Northminst­er United Church, 300 Sunset Blvd., will host a luncheon and card party Wednesday, Feb. 15 beginning at noon. The cost is $10 per person and sold as a table for four. The church is wheelchair accessible. Call 705-748-4881 or 705-7426797 to reserve a table.

Activity Haven

Activity Haven, 180 Barnardo Ave., has several exciting events coming up in February that are open to the community.

A Valentine’s Day Brunch takes place Feb. 14 at noon. For $6 you can enjoy waffles with all the toppings, bacon, sausages, eggs, fresh croissants, black forest trifle, coffee and tea. A Shrove Tuesday Lunch happens Feb. 21 at 11:30 a.m. Pancakes with fruit, sausages, eggs, fresh fruit salad, and coffee or tea costs $6.

A Beat the Cold Bingo with a $500 prize board will be held Feb. 17. The canteen opens at 5:30 p.m., bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. Hamburger soup, rolls, and butter tarts are on the menu. The cost is $15.

Mini bucks bid euchre tournament­s take place this Saturday and Feb. 25. The cost is $5. BBQ hamburgers and pie will be sold. No beginners please.

Trent Riverside RailJam: Nonprofit ski and snowboardi­ng event. Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the parking lot at the Science Complex, Trent University. Open to all ages. $15 to participat­e, free to watch. Free giveaways, music, awards and hot chocolate. Hosted by the Trent Ski and Board Club. Five local entreprene­urs will take part in Cubs’ Lair Friday at the Gordon Best Theatre. The finalists in the annual competitio­n from FastStart Peterborou­gh will pitch their ideas to judges beginning at 5 p.m., with the winner receiving a prize package worth $9,500. A committee of judges chose the five finalists: BabyEvia, Front Office Hockey, Glamazon Esthetics, Mobile Bottle Press and Sweet Spirits. The competitio­n, modelled on the local Bears’ Lair event and TV shows such as and was open to Peterborou­gh-area residents between the ages of 18 and 29 who are either starting their own business or in the early stages of planning. Friday’s judges are Cameron Taylor, Founder and CEO of OutdoorSma­rt!, Catia Skinner, CEO of Kawartha Entertainm­ent Group and co-owner of Mega Experience, and Deanna Henry, Founder of Alchemy Co. and winner of the inaugural Cubs’ Lair.
