OMEMEE -- Two city teams are heading to the COSSA championships in Sterling next month after the Holy Cross Hurricanes claimed the Kawartha high school curling championship in finals held at the Omemee Curling Centre on Tuesday.

In the girls draw, Holy Cross defeated Thomas A. Stewart 6-5 in the gold medal game, while TASSS then defeated B side winner I.E. Weldon of Lindsay 4-3 in the silver medal game. Both teams will advance to COSSA competition on March 6 and 7.

The girls’ final came down to the last rock and coach Rob Curtin said while his team remained consistent, to their credit, TASSS never let up.

“It was a real battle back and forth and we’re real proud of both teams,” he said.

The Hurricanes – including Aly Kehoe, Sarah Cowen, Erin Fancy and Amelia Fleming used great weight judgement and did well executing “Plan B,” things they will need to continue in order to be successful at COSSA, Curtin said.

“But the biggest thing is for all the girls to have a good time while they are on the ice,” he added.

Fancy, the skip, said the team maintained its focus and strong communication. They share a camaraderie that comes with them spending a lot of time together in school – the Grade 12 students are largely friends who attend many of the same classes.

The team was also very relaxed – they didn’t have high expectations coming in – so being crowned Kawartha champion was a “complete surprise,” she said.

In the boys draw, Fenelon Falls defeated St. Peter 11-4 in the gold medal game, while B side winner Haliburton downed St. Peter 3-1 in the silver medal game. Those winners will also advance to the Central Ontario championships.

To get to the girls final, Holy Cross defeated Haliburton 9-4 and Lindsay Collegiate 13-1, while TASSS beat Weldon 7-6 in games played Feb. 15.

To get to the boys final, St. Peter defeated Cobourg 9-4 and Weldon 8-0 on the same date.
