Winter workshops available for area farmers

OMEMEE - There are many workshops for farmers in the Omemee area during the winter. An Integrated Pest Management Course for Corn and Soybeans will be held in Caesarea on March 2 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Call 1-866-225-9020 for registrati­on and location details.

Secrets of the soil lunch and learn will be held March 14. This workshop will focus on how good soil can increase yields, reduce fertilizer needs, prevent erosion and save money.

The East Central Soil and Crop Improvemen­t Associatio­n will be holding a soil health workshop at Manvers Community Centre on March 22. Plans are in progress and details of the event will be included in future columns.

Farm show

The East Central Farm Show will be held March 8, 9:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. and March 9, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Commonwell Exhibition Building, Lindsay fairground­s. Admission is $5 or free with a Soil and Crop membership.

This show has exhibitors from all sectors of agricultur­e and offers a chance to gather informatio­n as well as socialize with other farmers.

Garden club

All Omemee Garden Club members and other interested parties are invited to the 2017 kickoff potluck lunch. Bring your own plate, cutlery and mug and your favourite dish to share. It will take place Feb. 25 at noon, social time begins at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity United Church. Following the lunch there will be a presentati­on, “What’s the Buzz? Bee Amazed!!” when Joe and Hazel Cook will share informatio­n about their newest passion, beekeeping.

St. James

St. James Anglican Church, north of Fowlers Corners on Frankhill Rd., will hold a pancake supper including pancakes, peameal bacon, baked beans, maple syrup and pie, Feb. 25, 4 to 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. For informatio­n call 705-292-5144

Curling

The Omemee Curling Centre will hold a Wings and Beer Night, Feb. 24, 5 to 7 p.m. $15 for dinner, $20 for dinner and curling. Beer samples provided by The Publican House Brewery in Peterborou­gh.

Prayer

The 2017 World Day of Prayer service was prepared by the women of the Philippine­s. The service will be held March 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Causeway Christian Assembly, 1307 Yankee Line, Bridgenort­h. All are welcome to attend.

Pesticides

Pesticide Handling courses will be held in Lindsay on April 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Pontypool on Feb. 24 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. For further details or to register call 800-652-8573. Classes are filling up quickly so call to reserve your seat soon.

Legion

The jam sessions continue at the Legion, March 4 and 18, beginning at 1 p.m. Come and enjoy the music or bring your non-acoustic instrument and join in the fun.

Seniors

The Omemee Seniors meet at the Legion, Feb. 28 for euchre, beginning at 1 p.m. and Feb. 21, noon, for a potluck lunch. Bring your own place setting as well as a favourite dish to add to the selection.

Community Care

Community Care offers many programs for the residents of City of Kawartha Lakes.

The indoor walking program has started for the season. This program is organized in conjunctio­n with the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team and held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 7 p.m. at LCVI. For informatio­n call Melinda at ext. 301 or email mgilmour@ccckl.ca

Meals on Wheels are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays excluding holidays for residents of Omemee and Downeyvill­e. For $6 you can receive soup, entree, bun, and dessert delivered to your door. Call the main office for informatio­n.

Adult daycare is available Mondays and Thursdays at Trinity United Church to allow caregivers a chance for respite. The day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call the office for further details.

Community Care offers many support groups. Caregivers’ Support for those caring with someone with a terminal or life limiting illness, Feb. 22, 10 a.m.11:30 a.m., 2 Kent St. W., ext. 503.
