Evans hits a milestone

Evans closes in on seventh in all-time NLL assists, climbs to third in league scoring race this season

Peterborou­gh’s Shawn Evans has become one of only eight players in National Lacrosse League history with more than 600 assists and needs 10 more assists to surpass seventh-place Gavin Prout in all-time assists.

After a 16-point weekend, Evans is now third in league scoring so far this season with 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points, five points behind leader Lyle Thompson of the Georgia Swarm. Evans is also now tied with Corey Small for the league lead in assists at 35.

Evans and the New England Wolves split a pair with the Buffalo Bandits over the weekend, winning 14-11 at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Friday night and losing 16-15 in overtime on Sunday night at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Ct.

Evans had four assists in Friday’s game and six goals and six assists Sunday, while fellow Peterborou­gh Laker Chad Culp had an assist Friday and two assists Sunday. Laker Evan Kirk had the win in net Friday but took the loss Sunday when Mitch de Snoo scored in overtime.

Peterborou­gh native Brad Self had a goal Friday and a goal and four assists Sunday for Buffalo, while fellow Laker Mark Steenhuis had two goals and three assists in each of the two head-to-head games.

Swarm still in first

The Georgia Swarm maintained their grasp on first place in the NLL East Division with a 15-9 win over the Rochester Knighthawk­s on Sunday at the Infinite Energy Arena.

Peterborou­gh natives Josh Currier had a goal and two assists and Cory Vitarelli had two assists for Rochester.

12-point game for Small

CALGARY — Corey Small had four goals and eight points and Logan Schuss scored four times and added two assists as the Vancouver Stealth beat the Calgary Roughnecks 13-10 on Saturday in National Lacrosse League action.

Jordan Durston struck twice for the Stealth (3-5), who also got goals from Matt Beers, Rhys Duch and Ryan Wagner. Tye Belanger made 44 saves for the win.

Dane Dobbie led the Roughnecks (3-4) with three goals and four assists. Peterborou­gh Laker Curtis Dickson had three goals and three helpers, Wesley Berg had a hat trick and Jeff Shattler Saskatchew­an Rush defender Mike Messenger goes to move the ball past Peterborou­gh native Robert Hope, a defender with the Colorado Mammoth, during NLL action at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon on Saturday. The Rush held on for an 8-7 win, their fifth in a row added a goal and four assists to round out the offence.

Frank Scigliano and Christian Del Bianco split duties in net for Calgary. Scigliano stopped 28-of37 shots while Del Bianco allowed four goals on 14 shots.

Vancouver went 2 for 3 on the power play while the Roughnecks scored twice on six chances with the man advantage.

Fifth win in a row for Rush

SASKATOON — Ben McIntosh had two goals and an assist as the Saskatchew­an Rush held on to beat the Colorado Mammoth 8-7 on Saturday in National Lacrosse League action.

Curtis Knight and Mark Matthews each had a goal and two helpers for the Rush (5-2), who won their fifth game in a row. Jeff Cornwall, Chris Corbeil, Ryan Keenan and Adrian Sorichetti rounded out the offence.

Jacob Ruest and Brent Adams had a pair of goals apiece for the Mammoth (4-4), who also got singles from Callum Crawford, Stephen Keogh and Eli McLaughlin. Crawford tacked on four assists to lead all players with five points.

Aaron Bold made 27 saves for the win as Dillon Ward stopped 45 shots in a losing cause.

Saskatchew­an went 1 for 4 on the power play while Colorado scored twice on four chances with the man advantage.

Rock beat Knighthawk­s

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Brett Hickey, Tom Schreiber and Reid Reinholdt each had two goals and two assists as the Toronto Rock downed the Rochester Knighthawk­s 10-6 on Saturday in National Lacrosse League action.

Phil Caputo also had a pair of goals while Kieran McArdle and Nick Rose added singles for the Rock (5-2). Nick Rose made 42 saves for the win.

DanDawsonl­edtheKnigh­thawks (2-5) with two goals and two helpers. Peterborou­gh natives Cory Vitarelli and Josh Currier, along with Brad Gillies and Joe Resetarits, rounded out the offence. Laker Matt Vinc stopped 36-of-46 shots in defeat.

Toronto went 1 for 4 on the power play while Rochester was 2 for 2.

Powless scores OT winner

TORONTO — Johnny Powless scored his second goal and fifth point of the night in overtime as the Georgia Swarm edged the Toronto Rock 13-12 on Friday in National Lacrosse League action.

Shayne Jackson had a pair of goals, including one at 14:56 of the fourth quarter to force overtime as Georgia extended its lead on Toronto for first in the East.

Kiel Matisz matched Powless with two goals and three assists, Miles Thompson had a hat trick, Lyle Thompson had a goal and eight helpers and Jordan Hall produced a goal and five assists for the Swarm (6-1).

Jerome Thompson and Jordan MacIntosh each scored once to round out the offence.

Kieran McArdle led the Rock (4-2) with three goals while Tom Schreiber had a goal and six points. Brett Hickey and Stephan Leblanc each had a goal and three assists, Dan Lintner struck twice while Latrell Harris, Damon Edwards, Brodie Merrill and Peterborou­gh’s Turner Evans added singles.

Mike Poulin made 52 saves for the victory while Nick Rose stopped 49 shots in defeat.

Georgia went 5 for 6 on the power play while Toronto was 3 for 7.

“It was a game you want to come out of on the right side of, but we didn’t, and that’s disappoint­ing,” said Rock coach Matt Sawyer.

“We’re bound to face some adversity in the season, this is our first real test of it. We have to have a real short memory and forget about what happened tonight.”
