The Adam Scott Lions’ appetite for first place earned them the KPREAA North Intermediate boys basketball championship title Monday.

The Lions beat the Westmount Wildcats 34-29 in the finals at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School.

The two entered the second half of the finals tied at 12-12. They stayed neck and neck throughout most of the second half, before the Lions managed to inch their way to a win.

Adam Scott played Westmount earlier during the round-robin tournament, losing by one point.

“Our guys just seem to be a little hungrier in that last game,” said Mike Colling, Lions coach, of the final game.

Throughout the last five years, Colling said it’s typical for games between Adam Scott, Westmount and James Strath to come down to one or two points for the win.

“It’s kind of a battle between who wants to work the hardest, who wants to compete a bit more,” he said.

By the finals, coaching is thrown out the door and the game is left in the players hands, he added.

“You really never know what’s going to happen.”

Lions’ Nate Oatway, 14, said his team hustled in the final game.

“We played really good on defence and boxed out and got rebounds,” Oatway said.

Teammate Hunter Novak, 13, agreed.

“We improved on our rebounds and we started running our plays that we had worked on in the previous games,” Novak said.

After losing to Westmount in 2016, Novak said Monday’s win felt good.

“This year we came back and won, so it’s a great feeling,” Novak said.

Adam Scott advances to KPREAA in Cobourg on Monday. Westmount and James Strath are also advancing to compete against the top three teams from the KPREAA South, East and West divisions.
