The Peterborough Oldtimers Soccer League has changed its name to the Peterborough Men’s Over 35 Soccer Club and also created a new annual award.
The name change was confirmed at the club’s annual general meeting last month.
In recognition of Ken Prentice’s service to the club the executive also created the Ken Prentice Award to be presented to dedication and service to the club.
The inaugural winners were Barry Clements and Billy Shaw who received the award from Prentice at the AGM.
Prentice, who is now retired from the club, helped start the league about 35 years ago, and was an integral part of the executive until his retirement a couple of years ago, according to a club press release.
“The sport and the club have always been special to Ken, and he has always given back more than was asked. That’s what make him special and why the award was named after him,” stated the release.
Shaw has been with the club almost from the beginning. He has been serving on the executive for 26 years, either as president or vice-president. He currently holds the position of past-president and is still playing the game he loves.
“He is also there to guide the new members of the executive with his sage advice,” stated the release.
Clements joined the club in 2000 as a player and won a championship in his first year. He joined the executive as match secretary in 2001, where he handled all correspondence for the club. In 2003, he became a team rep and helped to grow the league by his efforts on the executive that resulted in adding more teams. In 2008, he took on a more active role with the club. He represented the club at the ECOSA level and attended meetings on its behalf, working with ECOSA and the City of Peterborough. He continues to play, manage and act as match secretary.
Registration is now open for the 2017 season. The goal is to provide an enjoyable and safe recreational environment for men aged 35 and over. Games are played Friday nights with both outdoor and indoor seasons.
