MP’s office sent ceaseand-desist letter to constituent

- VALERIE MACDONALD POSTMEDIA NETWORK

A Cobourg woman who works in alternative health care says she is disappointed with the cease-anddesist letter she received from staff at Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Kim Rudd’s constituency office.

Caroline Medd said she sent a series of eight, sealed letters to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau within an envelope addressed to Rudd in order to bring attention to a family immigration issue with which they needed help. She said she hand-delivered these letters to the local MP constituency office as a way of getting them directly to the PM.

“I did it this way because I thought it would be the fastest route to get it there,” Medd said.

Medd said she did not expect the letters themselves to be opened, because the envelopes inside containing the letters were sealed, and had Trudeau’s name on them.

Medd said she was surprised, therefore, to receive a letter dated Feb. 27 from Rudd’s staff asking that she “please cease-and-desist dropping off these vague communications to our office.”

Rudd said the letters were opened because they had come to her office and not directly mailed to the PM. Any letter can be taken to the post office and will be forwarded to the PM without even a stamp, she said.

Rudd said her job is to deal with constituents’ needs and provide information but “I cannot help someone outside my riding.”
