Wines that work well with Weight Watchers

- SHARI DARLING Shari Darling’s books and other publications are available at understandpublishing.com

One of my best friends is a wine educator who decided to do Weight Watchers to shed some unwanted weight. I never thought this lifestyle philosophy would work for wine and food lovers. Apparently, according to my friend, it does! She has continued to enjoy the foods and wine she likes, all the while losing those extra pounds.

In fact at http://weightwatchers.com you can purchase a set of 2 Weight Watchers Portion Control Wine Glasses for $19.99.

While I don’t partake in Weight Watchers myself, I thought I would pair a few of their online recipes with complementary wines. I have dieted and lost 80 pounds myself. And one of the ways I did this was to buy quality ingredients and quality wines and just eat and drink less. So dining occurs as an culinary experience rather than a sacrifice or diet. I say spend the extra few dollars, treat yourself, and maintain your diet or lifestyle philosophy for as long as required or for life! Here goes: Weight Watchers Chopped Greek Salad with Creamy Yogurt Dressing at http://weightwatchers.ca is an ideal meal for lunchtime or on hot summer evenings.

One and a half cups of salad is 3 points and tastes even better when served with a chilled standard glass of Sauvignon Blanc (white wine). Have you ever tried Icelandic yogurt called Skyr? My goodness, it’s the best plain yogurt I’ve ever tasted. It is less acidity and is super thick.

A mouthful of Skyr plain yogurt is almost like eating Devon cream! Not really, but close.

A Weight Watchers standard glass of wine is 4 ounces and 4 points. A 6 ounce glass is 5 points. The acidity in Sauvignon Blanc complements the tanginess in lemon juice, fresh tomatoes and yogurt. The briny saltiness in black olives nicely offsets the wine’s acidity, bringing harmony.

Kim Crawford 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, (CSPC 35386), $1999: releasing April 1, 2017. This is one of the mostly consistently good, qualitative Sauvignon Blanc from year to year. Always springing with citrus notes on the nose and palate with zinging acidity.

Weight. Watchers Stove Top Macaroni and Cheese at http:// kitchme.com made with elbow noodles, skim milk, flour, onion powder, low fat cheddar cheese, Tabasco sauce and freshly ground black pepper. One serving is 10 SmartPoints. Pair a serving of this comfort food with a glass of chilled big, fat Chardonnay. You will be dining Weight Watchers gourmet style. A standard glass of Chardonnay is 4 points. This dish can be made gluten-free, as well. At http://weightwatchers.com you will also find a 4 Cheese Mac and Cheese.

Trius Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, (CSPC 251470), $20.20: showing classic apple aromas and flavours with medium body and creamy texture. This wine has enough creaminess (at 13.5 percent alcohol) to match the fatty nature in this healthy version of Mac and Cheese.

This Chardonnay will also work with Weight Watchers Parmesan Chicken Cutlets and Weight Waters Cornmeal Battered Oven Friend Catfish (6 points). Grilled Pizza with Chicken Sausage, Onion, and Peppers (7 points) combines tomato sauce with thinly sliced cooked chicken sausage, yellow peppers, red onions, dried oregano and partlyskim mozzarella cheese on a whole wheat tortilla. Pizza always tastes great with a chilled glass of Pinot Noir (light, fruity red). Pelee Island Pinot Noir VQA, (CSPC 135939), $14.95 is one of their more expensive red wines. This winery is also renowned for producing delicious Pinot Noir on a consistent basis, year after year. Pelee Island is the most southerly part of Ontario seeing lots of sun and longer sunshine hours. A classic Pinot Noir this wine is with light body, refreshing acidity and light cherry flavours in the aromas and on the palate. The wine’s acidity offsets the tangy nature of tomato sauce.
