Murder charge laid in Tyendinaga shooting
TYENDINAGA -- A 25-year-old Belleville man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a man early Sunday morning at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, about 130 kilometres east of Peterborough.
Brandon Phillip George Baptiste was also charged with pointing a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
He appeared in Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Monday and was remanded into custody and will next appear in court Thursday.
Ken Ferrill, 43, of Tyendinaga, died of a gunshot wound, Napanee OPP said Monday after an autopsy was conducted in Ottawa.
At about 3:19 a.m. Sunday, the Tyendinaga Police Service received a 911 call from a person regarding a man injured at a home on Deserontyon Drive.
OPP were contacted and a joint investigation was launched under the direction of Det. Insp. Rob Matthews of the OPP criminal investigation branch, involving officers from the Tyendinaga Police Service, the Napanee OPP and the Napanee OPP crime unit.
Ferrill was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Monday at the Ottawa Hospital.
Baptiste was arrested later on Sunday.
