Murder charge laid in Tyendinaga shooting

TYENDINAGA -- A 25-year-old Belleville man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a man early Sunday morning at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, about 130 kilometres east of Peterborou­gh.

Brandon Phillip George Baptiste was also charged with pointing a firearm and unauthoriz­ed possession of a firearm.

He appeared in Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Monday and was remanded into custody and will next appear in court Thursday.

Ken Ferrill, 43, of Tyendinaga, died of a gunshot wound, Napanee OPP said Monday after an autopsy was conducted in Ottawa.

At about 3:19 a.m. Sunday, the Tyendinaga Police Service received a 911 call from a person regarding a man injured at a home on Deserontyo­n Drive.

OPP were contacted and a joint investigat­ion was launched under the direction of Det. Insp. Rob Matthews of the OPP criminal investigat­ion branch, involving officers from the Tyendinaga Police Service, the Napanee OPP and the Napanee OPP crime unit.

Ferrill was transporte­d to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem examinatio­n was scheduled for Monday at the Ottawa Hospital.

Baptiste was arrested later on Sunday.
