Peterborou­gh Curling Club rink third at playdowns

The Peterborou­gh Minor Hockey Council held its year-end awards banquet Wednesday night at the Kinsmen Civic Centre. Major award winners included (front l-r) Nancy SharpeâÄé, Wendy Turcotte, Cole Pottle, Sam Corcoran, Rob Fitzgerald; (back l-r) Will Cranley, Will Craig, Alex Ferrier, Tyler Deline, Mike Martone, Jack Sutherland and Bryan Hignett.

The Peterborou­gh Minor Hockey Council celebrated the end of the 2016-17 season with its annual awards banquet at the Kinsmen Civic Centre on Wednesday night.

Master of ceremonies Pete Dalliday, co-host of 100.5 FM Fresh Mornings with Pete and Catherine, kicked off the evening by interviewi­ng Minor Petes alumni Cedric Ralph and Quinn Hanna of the OHL Guelph Storm, along with Matt McNamara and Logan DeNoble of the OHL Petes.

Their message to the young players: have fun, enjoy your time with your teammates and work hard. The following are the 2016 PHC award winners:

Goaltender­s Award

(presented annually to the goaltendin­g duo with the best goals against average):

(presented annually to a major atom player voted by his teammates to be a player who plays the game of hockey with passion, skill and is well respected and liked by his teammates):

(presented annually to a major peewee player who has demonstrat­ed sportsmans­hip, strong team play, and places the interests of their team and teammates ahead of himself):

(presented annually to a major bantam player who has demonstrat­ed outstandin­g achievemen­t in scholastic and sportsmans­hip):

(presented annually to a player on the midget team who has demonstrat­ed great dedication, leadership and sportsmans­hip):

Clay Coles James Johnston Memorial Award

(presented annually to a minor Petes player who exemplifie­s James Johnston’s character and skill):

(presented annually to a minor Petes player who exemplifie­s David James’s character):

Peterborou­gh Curling Club rinks led by Ab Doyle and Jason Hogan teamed up to place third at the Silver Tankard Provincial Playdowns in Ajax on the weekend. The teams reached the event by winning the regional qualifier in Lakefield and provincial qualifier at Tam Heather earlier this season making it to the final four. Curling with skip Ab Doyle were Reis Brauch vice, Brad Robinson second and Enzo Tarantino lead. Hogan’s team consisted of Brad Kidd skip, Hogan vice, Rob Lewis second and Andrew Gerrits lead.
