Heritage Awards for Historical Society

The annual general meeting of the Peterborou­gh Historical Society was recently held at Princess Gardens.

The evening included a brief address by the Society’s honorary president Dr. Thomas H.B. Symons and a presentati­on by guest speaker Steve Guthrie, a videograph­er at CHEX television. In addition, the society’s Heritage Awards, were announced and presented by Graham Hart.

The Samuel Armour Award, presented for developmen­t and delivery of programs that engage students and others in exploring the diverse history of our region, was awarded to Curve Lake First Nation for production of their informativ­e documentar­y film Oshkigmong - A Place where I Belong. Anne Taylor accepted the award on behalf of Curve Lake First Nation.

The F.H. Dobbin Award, given for a publicatio­n that focuses on the Peterborou­gh and region’s past, was presented to Elwood Jones and Matthew Griffis for their book Postcards from Peterborou­gh and the Kawarthas.

The Martha Kidd Award recognizes outstandin­g work in preservati­on of the region’s building history, and was awarded to the County of Peterborou­gh for it’s sensitive and creative work in preserving significan­t remnants of the old county gaol and developing the informativ­e heritage park. Warden Joe Taylor accepted the award on behalf of the County.

The Charlotte Nicholls Award recognizes a substantia­l financial donation for the commemorat­ion of the cultural assets. For the first time, the Society presented a posthumous award to Marion Kaffka, for her very generous bequest towards maintenanc­e and operation of the Hutchison House Museum.
