Thor takes a hammering

Trailer depicts superhero’s very bad day

- MARK DANIELL

Thor is going to need a new hammer.

That’s just one of the tidbits we learned from the new trailer for

Thor: Ragnarok, the third instalment in the ongoing adventure’s of Marvel’s God of Thunder.

The first glimpse at the Taika Waititi-directed film shows Chris Hemsworth’s titular hero having a series of very bad days.

“I know what you’re thinking: How does this happen?” Thor says, as he’s chained and dangling over a fire. “Well, it’s a long story.”

From there, we meet the villainous Hela, played by Cate Blanchett, who is trying to bring about the destruction of Thor’s Asgardian home (she’s also the reason he’s without a hammer).

We also get reintroduced to Thor’s meddlesome brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and new characters Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum.)

But, in true Marvel fashion, they save the best for last as they show Thor about to fight a mysterious opponent in a gladiator match.

“We know each other,” Thor says when he sees that it’s his old friend the Hulk. “He’s a friend from work.”

Hulk is less than impressed with seeing Thor, though, and he immediately attacks his Avenger pal. Set to Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, the movie looks like it’s going to up the comedic levels to be more in line with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series. At the very least, we’ll find out why Hulk and Thor weren’t around during last year’s Captain America: Civil War.
