Trent University campus is a safe place
We are writing to address your recent article on racist and sexist incidents on Trent’s Peterborough campus. The article cites an outdated study from 2008 which had many methodological issues.
Racism and sexism continue to be important issues for all universities (and for society more generally), but formal reports of racism or sexism at Trent are relatively infrequent. Trent takes such concerns seriously.
We strongly encourage our students and other members of the Trent community to seek assistance with any concerns in order to help resolve them. On-campus offices which can be contacted include the Office of Human Rights, the Student Wellness Centre, Housing, the First Peoples House of Learning, Trent International, and Campus Security – as well as the President’s Office, the Chair of the Board, and the Associate Vice-President Students. We also have a range of educational initiatives designed to promote an inclusive campus.
As a university, we are committed to providing a student experience that is free from discrimination, harassment and intimidation. This is an ideal that characterizes our faculty, staff and programs. We take special pride in the work of Trent International and our Student Services, which consistently work to ensure cultural sensitivity and to support a diverse community of scholars.
