Neighbourhood now cut off from city transit

-

I was pleased to see my letter complaining about the lack of transit service on Hedonics Rd. In your letters column. Later that day, a notice appeared in the shelter announcing cancellation of all services at that location “due to construction.” Talk about irony! From little to none in one day.

Yes, there is construction, but not on the road. Hedonics is one of the narrowest streets in Peterborough. Some thoughtless official has seen fir to authorize parking on both sides of the road, allowing eight to 12 feet of open road down the middle, a “one-way” situation. Cars meeting head on, half-way – who has the right of way? Watching an 85-year-old attempt to reverse 100 yards around corner without a mishap ... Scratch and dent, it’s a bodyshop bonanza. Definitely not enough room for a bus to get through – God forbid we need a fire truck.

The construction is not at this location, but we are forced to be the solution to someone else’s problem. We must give up what little service we had. That is not our responsibility. We are not blocking anything. Why in all their wisdom does the city take it out on us? Enough already!

How about a rebate or refun for those who cannot make it up the hill to the other shelter? They have unusable bus passes. Consideration? I don’t think so. We were not approached by the transit authorities to get our input or opinion. Our taxes helped pay for these services. Do we get a break?

I hope I can continue my rant until we get the same service as other transit riders, 6 a.m.10:40 p.m. I probably won’t live that long.

This situation was to be a “temporary inconvenience.” If so, how about some “cold mix” along the curbing and allow parking on the grass boulevard? We feel like we are trapped, and while I personally don’t need a walker or a wheelchair (yet) by heart goes out to those who do.

And the Hedonics bus shelter – putting a physical barricade around it was a nice touch, like we might sit in there all day and not see the notice of cancellation of service. Whose idea was that? Come on, we’re old, not stupid.

My senior buddies tell me I’m wasting my time with my letters. But as a former councillor and city employees, I know an injustice when I see it. Come on, council! Treat us as equals.

Do I think the problem will be fixed? When pigs fly. Bill McKenzie Hedonics Rd.
