Connected by Canoe
Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2, sixteen paddlers will be given a send-off from the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Rd., before heading to Kingston where they will begin a 10-day, journey through the Rideau Waterway in a 36-foot voyageur canoe on their way to Ottawa.
Their journey, called Connected by Canoe, is a sesquicentennial project of the museum, Community Foundations of Canada and others to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
Among the paddlers will be youth and representatives from organizations such as Parks Canada, Curve Lake First Nation, Nunavut Sivuniksavut, and the Peterborough Kawartha Rotary Club, as well as media.
“The canoe has important lessons that can take the country forward,” says James Raffan, director of external relations for the museum. “This will be a fun trip but also a cultural experiment showing that the canoe can remind us that ‘pulling together’ and being ‘in the same boat’ are ways to bring us closer together.”
