Lakers to play in benefit lacrosse game for Special Olympics

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Corey Small scored his fourth goal of the night in overtime as the Vancouver Stealth edged the New England Black Wolves 17-16 on Saturday in NLL action.

With the win, Vancouver, coached by Peterborou­gh’s Jamie Batley, edges out the Calgary Roughnecks for a playoff spot. New England had already qualified for the playoffs

Rhys Duch had a hat trick with four assists for Vancouver (9-9) and Jordan Durston also had three goals. Logan Schuss and Joel McCready had a pair of goals apiece, while Peter McFetridge, Cory Conway and Brandon Clelland added singles. Tye Belanger made 66 saves for the win.

Kevin Crowley had five goals and two assists, Kevin Buchanan struck four times and added two assists for New England (8-10), while Peterborou­gh’s Shawn Evans had a goal and eight assists. Reilly O’Connor and Peterborou­gh Laker Chad Culp both struck twice. Brett Manney and Kyle Buchanan also found the back of the net. Doug Jamieson stopped 29-of-41 shots, while Peterborou­gh Laker Evan Kirk turned aside 13-of-18 shots.

Hat trick for Dickson

CALGARY — Peterborou­gh Laker Curtis Dickson had a hat trick and set up three other goals to power the Calgary Roughnecks past the Saskatchew­an Rush 14-7 on Saturday in National Lacrosse League play.

Dane Dobbie had a pair of goals and four assists for Calgary (8-10), while Riley Loewen and Wesley Berg had two goals apiece. Jeff Shattler, Bob Snider, Tyler Digby, Peterborou­gh’s Holden Cattoni and Curtis Manning added singles. Frank Scigliano made 53 saves for the win.

Peterborou­gh Laker Adam Jones scoredthre­etimesforS­askatchewa­n (12-6), while Ben McIntosh, Mark Matthews, Dan Taylor and Curtis Knight chipped in as well. Aaron Bold stopped 15-of-20 shots in the first half. Tyler Carlson turned aside 17-of-26 shots in relief.

Hickey scores five goals

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Brett Hickey struck five times as the Toronto Rock topped the Buffalo Bandits 19-15 on Saturday in National Lacrosse League play.

Latrell Harris, Tom Schreiber and Kieran McArdle had a hat trick apiece for the Rock (9-9), who clinched a post-season berth on Friday night with Rochester’s 13-10 loss to Georgia. Reid Reinholdt had a pair of goals, while Damon Edwards, Dan Lintner and Jesse Gamble chipped in as well.

Nick Rose stopped 17-of-25 shots in net before giving way to Brandon Miller, who turned aside 26-of-33 shots to earn the win in relief.

Ryan Benesch had four goals and four assists to lead Buffalo (6-12), while Pat Saunders scored four times with one assist. Mitch Jones scored twice and added three assists, while Craig England added a pair of goals. Anthony Malcom, Matthew Bennett and Kevin Brownell all found the back of the net.

Rush edge Mammoth

DENVER — Ben McIntosh had a hat trick and added an assist as the Saskatchew­an Rush edged the Colorado Mammoth 10-9 on Friday in National Lacrosse League action.

Ryan Keenan had a goal and set up four others for Saskatchew­an (12-5), while Curtis Knight scored twice and added two assists. Mark Matthews and Matthew Dinsdale had two goals apiece as Aaron Bold made 44 saves for the win.

Eli McLaughlin led Colorado (9-9) with three goals and three assists. Jeremy Noble and Chris Wardle had two goals and an assist each, Callum Crawford scored with four assists and Joey Cupido also found the back of the net.

Swarm, Knighthawk­s split weekend back-to-back games

The Georgia Swarm and the Rochester Knighthawk­s split a pair on the weekend, with Georgia winning 13-10 on Friday and Rochester winning 9-8 on Saturday.

While Georgia had already clinched the East Division, Rochester was officially eliminated from the playoffs.

Peterborou­gh’s Corey Vitarelli scored twice for Rochester while Chad Tutton scored for Georgia.

Some players with the MSL Peterborou­gh Lakers will take on a team of local elementary and high school teachers later this month in a benefit game for the Cradle for Special Olympics School Championsh­ips ahtletics program for high school athletes with special needs.

The game will take place at the Memorial Centre starting at noon on May 12.

Some of the teachers participat­ing are: Frank Drumm, Chad deLaPlante, Rod McGillis, Chris Moher, Ross Cowie, Steve Brown, Kevin Fitzgerald, Jim Wasson, Mac Arnott, Chris Gillespie, Jeremy Stillman and team captain Helen Lynett.

Some of the Peterborou­gh Lakers confirmed are: Scott Self, Mark Farthing, Josh Gillam, Darryl Gibson, Scott Evans, Matt Giles, Kyle Laverty, Matt Gilray, Corey Vitarelli, Josh Currier, Cole Murray and Stephen Hoar.
