Petes captain to play for Queen’s University Gaels

- EXAMINER STAFF

Peterborough Petes captain Brandon Prophet has committed to play for the Queen’s University Gaels in Kingston next season.

Prophet wrapped up his Ontario Hockey League career as an overager, helping guide the Peterborough Petes to the East Division pennant and through two playoff round sweeps of the Niagara IceDogs and Kingston Frontenacs before the Petes were swept out themselves by the Mississauga Steelheads in the Eastern Conference championship series. It was the best season the Petes have had since 2006.

Prophet, 20, a native of Brockville, is a 6’3”, 217-pound defenceman who was originally drafted by the Saginaw Spirit and was traded to the Petes from the Barrie Colts in the middle of the 2015-16 season.

He was named Petes captain at the start of the 2016-17 season and was one of the three overagers on the Petes for the season, along with Steven Lorentz, who has signed a three-year entry-level deal with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, and fellow defenceman Kyle Jenkins.

With three teams over five seasons, Prophet played in 311 regular season OHL games, with 12 goals and 64 assists for 76 points, and also in 37 playoff games, with two goals and five assists for another seven points.

NOTE: Tyler Paquette, who was recently drafted by the Petes in the OHL entry draft, was selected Monday night by the Des Moines Buccaneers Tier 1 junior team in the second round of the United States Hockey League futures draft. Paquette, 16, of Collegeville, Pa., has been playing high school hockey for The Hill School and has also committed to play for the NCAA’s Penn State University for the 2020-21 season. He’s no relation to Petes player Chris Paquette.
