Turnabout was fair play at the sixth annual St. Peter’s Classic boys field lacrosse tournament.

Last week, St. Peter’s travelled to Aurora and won the ninth annual St. Andrew’s College Invitational knocking off the host team 10-6 in the final. On Wednesday, St. Andrew’s exacted revenge going 3-0 to win the St. Peter’s Classic including a 10-6 win over the host Saints at Trent University’s Justin Chiu Stadium. St. Peter’s finished with a 2-1-1 record.

“We played really well at their tournament,” said Saints coach Rod McGillis.

“We caught them off guard. We were really dynamic offensively early. Sometimes you get a quick start and a four-goal cushion and you can ride that to the end and we did. In today’s game, we gave up too many fastbreaks and they capitalized. We didn’t defend them properly. They had one attackman we had trouble with. We corrected that shutting down the attack in the second half but their fastbreak was the difference.”

It’s the type of lesson McGillis says his team can learn from.

“That’s why we play in these tournaments,” he said. “That’s something we’d rather have exposed today and then we can work on it. COSSA and OFSAA are a few weeks away and this is exactly why you need these types of games.”

McGillis says he has a much younger team than normal this year but they’ve shown him enough to believe they can compete for an OFSAA medal.

“We have a 21-man roster and 17 new players. I’ve never had that in 21 years at St. Pete’s. We’ve got Grade 9s playing and I’ve never had that ever at St. Pete’s. We have Grade 10s assuming huge roles like Owen Hiltz, Holden Lowes and Charlie Kangas.

“It hit me today that we’re a really young team and we’re going to be good for a number of years to come. I didn’t know going in this year (what to expect) but these guys have played really well and are bringing a lot to the table. We’re expecting to compete for the OFSAA final four and I’m sure we’re going to set a goal to try to win the OFSAA gold.”

The Trent Excalibur men’s team helped the Saints run the tournament.

“The setting at Trent University is by far the best setting for any high school tournament in the province,” McGillis said. “I want to thank the Trent lacrosse program for all their support of high school lacrosse in the area.”

St. Andrew’s also beat Holy Trinity 14-4 and Holy Cross Hurricanes 11-1. The Saints tied Holy Trinity 6-6, defeated HIll Academy’s junior varsity team 8-6 and beat Holy Cross 11-2.

Hill Academy beat Holy Trinity 13-3 and Holy Cross 12-0.

Against Holy Trinity, Nolan Burke, Hiltz and Kal Watson had two goals and an assist, Connor Guest a goal and assist and Mitch Ogilvie two helpers. Against St. Andrew’s, Guest had two goals and an assist, Ogilvie two goals, Hiltz a goal and assist and Lowes scored with two assists to Burke.

Against Hill Academy, Ogilvie had two goals and four assists, Guest three goals while Lowes, Burke and Watson also scored. Hiltz had two assists and Andrew Lagana one. Garrett McPhee led the Saints with four goals against Holy Cross while Hiltz and Ogilvie scored twice. Tyson Pearce, Kangas and Watson had a goal and assist and Burke two assists.

Peterborough’s Kyra Maybee and Lily Stewart have been named to Canada’s Under-18 women’s rugby team.

Canada’s women’s U18 head coach Dan Valley named a 24-player squad for August’s two-game series with the USA on Wednesday.

Maybee, a Holy Cross student, and Stewart, from Thomas A. Stewart, attended a selection camp in B.C. during March Break. Canada will face the USA on Aug. 1 and 5 at Gee-Gees Field in Ottawa.

“We’ve selected a very skilled, physically gifted group for our series with the USA,” Valley stated in a Rugby Canada press release.

“We have five returning athletes from last year’s side that we’ll be leaning on heavily to set the expectations around both culture and performance. We have 85 days until we assemble as a group in Ottawa. Our challenge over the next 85 days is to continue to play, train and compete in our home provinces, making sure that we remain committed to the idea of making incremental gains every day.”

Ten players are selected from Ontario while another seven are from British Columbia. Alberta has five representatives with Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan each having one player named.
