William the Conqueror focus of presentation

- NAOMI STOCK naomi.stock@gmail.com

Emmanuel United Church and the Peterborough Historical Society are pleased to have Don Willcock, local historian and author, give a presentation on the unusual story of the William the Conqueror Oak Offering Plate on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the former St. Andrew’s Church, 441 Rubidge St.

Willcock’s talk will focus on Rev. James Rollins, who was minister at St. Andrew’s before the First World War, and also served during the war in England. He obtained some 1,000 year old wood, had it made into offering plates and presented them to St. Andrew’s congregation.

The event also features an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. of St. Andrew’s. This historic church was the first Presbyterian congregation in Peterborough, established in 1833. A free will offering will be collected, with proceeds going to the preservation of church archives. Copies of the latest Peterborough Historical Society Occasional Paper #37, titled Two Man, Two Wars: Peterborough’s John Kelleher and James Rollins, by Donald Willcock, will also be available for purchase and can be signed by the author. For more information, please phone 705-745-2722. All are welcome.
