The Queen's University Gaels confirmed Tuesday that Norwood's Kyra Maybee, a student at Holy Cross Secondary School in Peterborough, will be playing in the Gaels rugby program this fall. A fullback/wing, Maybee is a member of Canada's U18 women's rugby team, along with Peterborough's Lily Stewart, that will play a two-game series against Team USA in August. Maybee is one of five recruits the Gaels women's rugby team announced Tuesday. The 5'6” Maybee plans to study in the Queen's concurrent education program. Also joining Queen's for the upcoming season are centre/back three Hannah Daniels (Sutton), centre Emma Frey (Uxbridge), scrum half Simone Oliveira (Oakville) and flanker Thea White (Oakville). “We are delighted to welcome five experienced young women to the Gaels rugby family,” Queen's head coach Beth Barz stated in a release. “The collective speed, rugby IQ and work ethic of these five young athletes is already quite high and we are excited to help them build on their skills and to help them reach even loftier heights as studentathletes at Queen's.” Maybee was also with Rugby Canada's U18 sevens as a reserve and has played for Rugby Ontario's U16, U18 15-a-side and U18 sevens squads. She has won awards at Holy Cross as Top Female Athlete, Rugby MVP and Rookie of the Year.
