A player just knows when it’s time to hang up the lacrosse stick says long-time Peterborough Lakers captain Scott Self.

Self, 37, announced his retirement from the NLL earlier this year and confirmed he’s also retiring from the MSL during a press conference Wednesday at the Memorial Centre.

“It started with my body kind of falling apart,” Self said. “I made the decision in the winter to stay away. I thought, maybe, I’d play this summer but the longer I stayed away from the game you just kind of know it’s time. I wasn’t as motivated to get back and play.”

Self, who works for Canada Post, and his girlfriend Candace Turcotte are expecting their first child in August. While he expects to give back to lacrosse in the future, he says he’s taking a break for now.

“I’m going to take a couple of months here to get ready for the baby and once the baby is here

Estella Warren’s arrest in Los Angeles this week will not affect her pending induction into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame, says the Hall’s chairman.

The Peterborough native was a national level synchronized swimmer before switching to a modelling and acting career. The former Chanel model is best known for her roles in and

Last month, the Hall of Fame announced Warren as one of seven members of the 2017 induction class to be officially enshrined at the annual induction dinner on June 2 at the Evinrude Centre.

On Sunday, Warren was arrested following an incident at her Marina del Ray apartment. She was booked for misdemeanour domestic violence and released after posting $20,000 bail. Warren is accused of covering her boyfriend in cleaning fluid. The unnamed boyfriend is reportedly OK. He declined medical treatment at the scene.

“We don’t know what her personal business is,” said Hall of Fame chairman Ken Ruttan. “I can’t make any comment about her charge because I know nothing about it. I things are going to be a lot different,” he said. “I think it’s good for me to take a bit of a break because I’ve done it year-round for the last 15 or 16 years on top of working,” he said.

Self joined the Lakers in 2002, after starting his senior career out west, and was part of a core group of local players who turned the franchise around. He’ll walk away with five Mann Cup rings, seven MSL titles and 13 trips to the MSL final in his 15 seasons.

“My first year here there would be 100 people in the stands,” he said.

“We were middle of the pack competitive. The next year we were actually playing in the Kinsmen (arena) because of the renovations at the Memorial Centre. 2004 was the year we put it all together and won the Mann Cup and everything went from there. It’s kind of amazing to see what it’s grown into. I feel pretty lucky to be a part of that.”

Day said Brock Sorensen’s status for this summer is uncertain after he know what was in the paper. That doesn’t affect her (induction). Her record puts her in; not her criminal record but her athletic record puts her in the Hall.

“There is no change. We are going to carry on.”

Ruttan said no one has ever been removed from the Hall of Fame or been prevented from going into the Hall, once elected, because of conduct unrelated to their athletic achievements.

Ruttan said the Hall once removed a photo from a wall of a person charged with murder, but that person wasn’t a member of the Hall; it was a historical team photo.

Ruttan said Warren expressed a desire to attend the induction dinner but her attendance has not been confirmed.

It’s not her first run-in with the law. Warren was slapped with four misdemeanour charges following a DUI arrest in 2011. She reportedly slammed her Toyota Prius into three parked cars and was held on suspicion of DUI, but allegedly resisted arrest and tried to kick a police officer. She was escorted to a local police station, but managed to slip out of her handcuffs Long-time Peterborough Lakers captain Scott Self congratulates new Lakers captain Robert Hope on Wednesday afternoon at the Memorial Centre. Three charges were dropped when she pleaded guilty to DUI and was ordered to attend an 18-month alcohol program and was also sentenced to 60 months of summary probation and ordered to pay costs and penalties.

Warren’s talent in the pool was evident from an early age. At 12 she moved to the Olympium Club in Etobicoke to further her development. She competed in solo, duet, figures and team events. In 1992 she captured two gold medals at the Eastern Divisional Championships; three gold and one silver at provincials; one silver and two bronze at the Canadian championships and one silver as Stephen Hoar’s status is uncertain.
