New Horizons band hosts musical fundraiser

Each spring, the Peterborough New Horizons Band hosts a concert fundraiser and donates proceeds to a different charity each year.

This year, PNHB presents the 1-In-9 concert, slated for May 26 starting at 7 p.m. at Calvary Pentecostal Church, 1421 Lansdowne St. W.

The concert gets its name from this statistic: one in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Proceeds from the May concert are earmarked for the PRHC foundation and will fund a state-of-theart mammography machine for the PRHC’s Breast Assessment Centre. The new machine generates more accurate images and helps in early detection.

Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

The fundraiser means a lot for PNHB member Judith Manary, 71.

“I had breast cancer twice. Both times, it was picked up on the mammogram,” revealed Manary.

She was diagnosed five years ago and underwent a lumpectomy.

Then 18 months later, a scheduled mammogram showed an abnormality. When she left the Breast Assessment centre an hour later, Manary was already scheduled for a mastectomy. That’s when she experienced the caring nature of her fellow band members.

“A couple of members came to stay with us during my recovery,” she said. She returned to PNHB in 2014 while undergoing chemotherapy and was overwhelmed by the support she got from fellow band members.

“All of these women came forward and told me I was not alone,” she said.

One person in particular commented on the chemo hat she was wearing, which came from the chemo room at PRHC, donated by individuals. It turned out that her fellow band member had made the hat and donated it to the chemo room, which provides hats, blankets and other items free of charge to chemo patients.

“We are all giving of our time at PNHB,” she said.

All PNHB bands and specialty groups are slated to perform at the May 26 concert.

Manary will perform along with her bandmates, who she considers her second family.

“I’m playing the flute in the Skylark, and Jubilee bands and the alto sax in the green band,” she said.

Manary believes in getting regular mammograms.

“Do your screening,” said Manary. “Mammograms have come a long way and 30 minutes may save your life.”
