Archives hosting Ladies of the Lake tours

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

Trent Valley Archives (TVA) will highlight some of the interesting women buried in Little Lake Cemetery during their Ladies of the Lake walking tours. The tours includes both famous and lesser known women of the 18th and 19th centuries and run Sundays, May 21 and September 10, from 2 until 3:30 p.m.

“Along with writer Isabella Valancy Crawford and benefactor Charlotte Nicholls, participants will learn about lesser known women such as Almira Foley and Lovina Weir … Almira Grover Foley took an extraordinary interest in the welfare of those less fortunate in their daily struggles in the strange and difficult wilderness in Upper Canada. Her legacy is felt in the County even today through her ‘Continuing Trust’. The special relationship between Lovina Tennyson Weir and her husband John Graham Weir is wonderfully described in his journal which is held at TVA and has been replicated in the weekly Keene column (by Pat Marchen) in the Examiner,” states a release for the tours.

To find out more about these women and others whose stories deserve to be told, join the tour by reserving with Heather at 705-7454404, by email at admin@trentvalleyarchives.com or at Eventbrite at http://tinyurl.com/ ny732p2 The cost is $17 per person and reservations are required.

Loggerhead Marsh

The Peterborough Field Naturalists’ (PFN) Sunday nature walk May 21 will explore Loggerhead Marsh with Paul Frost, Professor of Aquatic Sciences at Trent University.

Frost and PFN members have advocated to have this marsh protected from the impact of encroaching urban development. Containing a large area of cattail marsh, patches of forested wetland, and expanses of wet meadows with an outflow stream that flows through several forested areas and downstream into Jackson Creek, it is now recognized as a provincially significant wetland.

Participants should meet at 1419 Ireland Dr. at 8 a.m. There is plenty of street parking available. Bring binoculars and wear boots. The accessibility level is mostly easy with some small slopes of moderate difficulty.

All retired education employees in the Peterborough district are invited to attend the Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO) Spring Luncheon and General Meeting May 30 at Elmhirst Lodge. Refreshments will be available at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will follow entertainment by Linda Kash, actress and morning radio show host.
