There are several fun family events coming up at the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Rd. to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary as well as their own 20th anniversary. Through exhibits and programs both on and off the water, the museum will share the art, culture, heritage and spirit of paddled watercraft.

Sunday will be the fourth annual Touch a Truck event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot. Vehicles expected include a fire truck, a school bus, cement mixing truck, police car and a mobile production truck. In addition to “touching” each vehicle, children will have the opportunity to climb inside, speak with the driver, and learn about the vehicle’s use. Lunch will be available to purchase, as Harvey’s will be onsite flipping burgers. The $5 admission per person, three years of age and older, includes admission to the museum. Proceeds support the initiatives of the museum.

“Touch a Truck is such a great event for families,” says Devon Bathurst, Development Manager. “The kids are so excited to see and touch the various trucks and vehicles but they really light up when they actually get a chance to climb in and even honk the horns!”

Paddlers are invited to join the Canadian Canoe Museum, the Land Canadian Adventures and Parks Canada on Saturday, June 24 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate National Canoe Day at the Lock ‘n Paddle event by filling the Peterborough Lift Lock with canoes and kayaks. Last year’s event saw 138 canoes and kayaks in the Lift Lock tubs, this year the group is hoping to break that record by fitting 150 canoes and kayaks in each tub in celebration on Canada150. Paddlers can meet either at the upper or lower reach of the Lift Lock at 1 p.m., and are required to bring their own canoe or kayak, gear and safety equipment. Participants must wear a PFD at all times to participate in the event.

The museum will once again be offering Voyageur Canoe Tours in their 36’ Montreal Canoe stationed at the base of the Peterborough Lift Lock for the summer, but it will also be travelling to various public events and courses. There are a series of family paddling days, experiential tourism offerings and free public tours throughout the upcoming season. You can view the Museum’s Voyageur Canoe Summer calendar online at canoemuseum.ca/ voyageur-canoe-tours.
