Adam Scott wins COSSA senior boys rugby title

The Adam Scott Collegiate Lions senior rugby qualified to represent COSSA at the OFSAA championsh­ips next week in Ottawa at the COSSA AA boys rugby tournament held Wednesday at Cobourg St. Mary’s.

In the morning semi-final, the Lions beat defending AA OFSAA goldmedall­ist Trenton 28-7. Trys were scored by Eric Palmer, Joah Charles, Liam O’Connor and Nick Wood. Steve Commerford converted all four scores.

In the other semi-final, Lindsay Collegiate made up for a 17-5 deficit early in the second half to beat Belleville Centennial 35-17. Adam Scott then beat LCVI in the final; LCVI also qualifies for OFSAA.

Ben Christophe­r opened the scoring in the first three minutes by touching down a blocked kick in the LCVI goal. Wood added to the lead in the first half with a strong run. Both trys were converted by Commerford. Wood scored early in the second half and the Lions defence held on down the stretch to preserve the win.

In the junior semi-finals, St. Mary’s beat Bayside by a 24-14 score and in the other semi-final Belleville’s Centennial beat Adam Scott 17-5.

The Adam Scott try was scored by Steven Owen. In the junior consolatio­n match-up Adam Scott opened the scoring early and cruised to a 34-12 win over Bayside. Scoring for the Lions was Mack McFarlane with two tries, as well as Brock Gillespie who also chipped in with two converts, Liam Upper and Stewart Rees. In the junior final, Centennial beat St. Mary’s 45-12.
