Beamer won’t be running for mayor

Coun. Andrew Beamer says he’s not going to run for mayor in 2018.

The Northcrest ward councillor, who’s in his second term, won’t rule it out in the future, though.

“We’ll see what the future holds, but not for 2018,” he said of the mayor’s race. “If I run in 2018, it will be for re-election in Northcrest Ward.”

Beamer says he’s very likely to run again in that ward, in the next election.

That election is nearly a year and a half away, on Oct. 22, 2018 - yet speculation has already begun about who might be seeking office.

Mayor Daryl Bennett hasn’t publicly said whether he’ll run again, and he wasn’t available for comment on Thursday.

In 2014, Bennett announced in late August that he would be running for re-election in October. There were just 67 days between the day he filed his nomination papers and the election.

He’s in his second term as mayor; he was elected in 2010.

Municipal elections are held every four years in Ontario. People who are thinking about running for office have plenty of time to make up their minds: the first day to file nomination papers is May 1, 2018.

The deadline to file those papers is 2 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2018.

If you’re considering a run, there’s no rush to decide: there are 305 working days from May 26 until deadline to file your nomination papers.
