Expropriation up for approval
Land needed for $23M project to widen Parkhill Rd. W. and build roundabout at Parkhill/Brealey
A plan to expropriate property along Parkhill Rd. W. for a roadwidening will be up for councillors’ approval, on Monday.
Parkhill Rd. W. is going to be widened and rebuilt from Ravenwood Dr. to Brealey Dr.
The project is expected to cost about $23 million and it will include a roundabout at Brealey Dr. – the first one in the city to join two arterial roads.
Although construction is only expected to begin in May 2019, tree clearing and relocation of utility poles is scheduled to take place in winter 2017-18. That’s why the city needs the land.
On Monday, councillors will be asked to approve a plan to expropriate property frontage and easements on 13 properties.
Eleven of the properties are along Parkhill Rd. W. One has an address on Ackison Rd. and two are on Brealey Dr.
In addition, one entire property – 1400 Parkhill Rd. W. – will need to be expropriated.
The property will be needed in its entirety to build the roundabout. There’s a rental residence there.
The road-widening is meant to improve the road as it accommodates growth in the west end of Peterborough.
Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2018 on the first 600 homes in the massive Lily Lake subdivision for example.
Those 600 homes will be the first of 2,800 planned for the farmland north of Jackson Park, at Lily Lake Rd. and Fairbairn St.
It’s rare for the city to expropriate lands: the city has properties appraised and makes offers to the owners, first.
But the city staff report states that expropriation will be necessary in this case for the road-widening project to begin on time. Don’t forget to check The
