NA Cup wagering Saturday at Kawartha Downs
New Kawartha Downs general manager Orazio Valente meets Forrest Porsche in the winners circle during harness racing June 10 in Fraserville. Valente will be barbecuing hot dogs and giving them away to program holders at Saturday night's race card.
Pepsi North America Cup excitement extends far beyond its host track of Mohawk. Fans at Kawartha Downs on Saturday night will be able to watch and wager on the special card from the Campbellville, Ont. racetrack, Kawartha Downs announced Friday.
In addition to the $1 million NA Cup, the program includes a myriad of the sport’s superstars in the Armbro Flight, Mohawk Gold Cup, NA Cup Consolation, Fan Hanover, Goodtimes, Roses Are Red and Preferred races.
The NA Cup is slated as Race 12 on the program with a 10:40 p.m. post time and Kawartha Downs will keep the concession stand and bar open to accommodate fans who wish to stay and watch and wager on one of the most elite Standardbred

The track will feature a special NA Cup contest where fans may select the horse they think will win the rich final. After the race is complete a name will be selected from the winning horse’s ballot box and the winner will take home a prize package of North America Cup and Kawartha Downs merchandise. Mohawk has shared some NA Cup swag with Kawartha Downs fans and it will be offered as prizes through trivia contests in the time leading up to the final.
Prior to the NA Cup, Kawartha offers a 10-race card with a 7 p.m. post time. South Monaghan’s Roy Hopkins was a winner at the Shannonville Drag Race Series opener last weekend.
Competing against clubs from London, Niagara, Ottawa and many points in between, Hopkins raced his 1965 Chevy Malibu to victory in Saturday’s Ontario Nostalgia Drag Racers event. He was runnerup on Sunday in the Shannonville Nostalgia Class. Brian Aker showed the Super Pro contenders the way to the podium with a runner up finish on Saturday and the win on Sunday. Steve Boardman led the way on Sunday and Brandon Barker was Saturday runner up.
In Sportsman, Peterborough’s Shields Brothers, Steve and Stu, took the win on Saturday with Holland Landing’s Glenn Tandy runner up. On Sunday, Paul Garant won with John Chatwood runner up.
In Nostalgia, Niagara based Barry Lee finished first on Saturday in his ‘68 Plymouth GTX with Oakville’s Scott Milne runner up. Kitchener’s Paul Forrest beat out Hopkins in Sunday’s contest.
Street Class Saturday winner Brad Parks was followed by Austin Harvie while Sunday was dominated by Hastings’ Karen Irvine South Monaghan's Roy and BillieJo Hopkins with their 1965 Chevy Malibu that Roy raced to first and second place finishes during the opening races of the Shannonville Drag Racing Series last weekend. with Peterborough’s Greg Scollard second.
In Juniors, Nathan Hoskin and Dylan Chatwood traded places with each recording a win and runner up. Junior Open racers Trevor Connell and Cole Iwanitzky played copy cat with each taking a win and runner up position.
The ONDR ran their own series with Hopkins winning and Milne runner up on Saturday in Nostalgia and Dave Britton beating Forrest on Sunday.
ONDR Comp class was dominated by Shane Paddle winning ahead of Milne on Saturday and Dan Cotton besting Forrest on Sunday.
