LAKEFIELD -- The images are black and white, but the stories are full of colour.

That’s the gist of

It’s a book coming out on July 1, written by Ed Arnold and illustrated by Drew Ridpath.

The softcover read is filled with stories about the people behind some of Lakefield’s well-known buildings.

Ridpath is a longtime Lakefield resident and industrial designer. Arnoldisanauthorandformermanaging editor of

While Ridpath sets the stage for the story with ink sketches of the buildings, Arnold brings the stories to life.

Some stories will make you laugh and others will make you cry, Arnold said, including tales from beyond the walls of the lumber company, insurance firm and hardware store.

The inspiration behind the city author’s 18th book was Ridpath.

“He does these marvellous drawings and he showed me a few and we went on a journey and started looking into the people behind the buildings and found some fascinating and powerful stories,” said Arnold.

The pair initially agreed on about 25 images. But that soon changed.

“Every week (Ed would) call me up and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got another story, Drew, you’ve got to draw this building,’” said Ridpath.

That’s because finding stories to share was easy.

“Pretty well everywhere you went there was another powerful story to tell,” said Arnold.

The duo talked about their upcoming book to crowded house at Christ Church Community Museum Wednesday night. It was $10 to get in and the money was donated to the museum.

They shared tidbits about what to expect in the book and showed off some of Ridpath’s drawings, too.

When asked about their favourites in the book, Ridpath was willing to share, stating the Christ Church Community Museum for example, while Arnold wasn’t so forthcoming.

“It’s liking asking if I have a favourite child, and I have two of them and they’re both my favourites,” said Arnold.

The pair also revealed the book’s launch date and signing on Wednesday night. It’s happening at Lakefield’s Isabelle Morris Park on July 1 from 4 to 7 p.m.

will then be available at Happenstance Books and Yarn in Lakefield and at office in Peterborough for $30. A Keene man, 32, wanted on a warrant went to police headquarters Wednesday where he was arrested and charged with domestic assault in connection with an incident in a parked vehicle June 12 involving a woman in her 20s. He was held in custody and was to appear in court Wednesday. His name was not released to protect her identity.
