Currier focusing on the pros

- -Mike Davies

With Zach Currier’s brilliant collegiate career behind him, the Peterborough native’s focus shifts to the pros and Century 21 Lakers.

Currier graduated from Princeton University and moved right into the Major League Lacrosse pro field loop with the Denver Outlaws. He also returned Sunday to join the Lakers for their 11-7 road win against the Cobourg Kodiaks. Currier will play his first home game this season 8 p.m. Thursday when the Lakers put their 6-0 record on the line against the Oakville Rock at the Memorial Centre. Currier has played two games for Denver recording three goals and three assists.

“It’s a lot faster and there are no weak links anywhere,” Currier said. “In college, there might be a few guys you can pick on in the defensive end who might be a little weaker than others but in the pro league everyone is solid. It’s a dog fight everywhere around the field.”

Currier is also expected to be a top pick in the National Lacrosse League in the fall but it’s not his main motivation with the Lakers. “I feel if I play hard and we win some games it will all work out in the wash,” said Currier, who is looking forward to being back on the PMC floor.

“I’ve lived and breathed Peterborough lacrosse since I was eight years old so anytime you get the chance to play in front of the Peterborough fans it’s an incredible feeling. I’m very thankful to have the opportunity,” he said.

With a number of players sidelined by injuries or other commitments Lakers’ GM Paul Day says Currier’s return is welcomed.

“Zach plays hard all over the floor,” said Day. “We will get extra possessions because he is in the lineup. He takes some pressure off Jake Withers and Dylan Evans on faceoffs.” The Lakers also visit the Brampton Excelsiors 8 p.m. Saturday.
