Assumption downs St. Johns in softball
Assumption A defeated St. John’s A 19-5 in Peterborough Community Church Softball League mite/ juvenile division play. Liam Hennessy hit two grand slams while Ewan Ferguson hit a grand slam, a two run home run and a triple. James Sullivan hit a double and singles were hit by Max Ronan with two, Emma Loucks, Autumn Fertile, Carson Dorris and Evan Beasley. Pitchers for Assumption were Julia Beasley, Loucks and Hennessy. Evan O’Brien hit a double for St. John’s. Lilly Huggins made a sharp catch to stop a line drive back to the pitcher’s mound by Hunter Meecham. Pitchers for St. John’s were Dane Cavanagh, Miles Vlau and Hughes. Sudbury’s Laurentian Swim Club played host to 574 swimmers representing 21 clubs. The Trent Torpedoes sent 36 swimmers and leading the way was 14 year old Samuel Loureiro Kent with top eight times in 50, 100 and 200 metre backstroke, 200 and 400 freestyle. Following closely behind, 14 year old Jaiden Rose had a bronze medal in the 50 backstroke and top eight in the 100, 200 backstroke, 800 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Maxeen Mullen, 12, swam for a gold medal in the 50 breastroke, top eight placing in 200 IM, 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 400 freestyle. Her 12 year old teammate, Mackenzie Garside won gold in the 100 breastroke, and had top eight placings in the 200 IM, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. Meg Rogers, 14, had top eight placings in the 50, 100, 200, 800 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Her 14 year old teammate Paige Piche, placed top eight in the 50, 100, 200 breastroke and 400 individual medley. Patrick Tompkins continued his strong season in the 13 year old age group with top eight placings in the 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Tristan Melville, competing in the 14 year old age group, had a silver medal in the 50 breastroke and top eight in 100 and 200 breastroke. Melville, Melville, Tompkins, and Loureiro Kent combined to place top eight in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Macy Mullen, competing in the 12 year old category finished top eight in 100 and 200 breastroke while teammate Ryder Linde Elmhirst, had solid performances winning a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle and a top eight placings in the 400 and 200 freestyle. Provincial qualifier Evan Feick had a top eight placing in the 50 and 200 breastroke. Provincial summer festival qualifier Elizabeth Ferrari placed in 100 and 200 backstroke and combined with Rogers, Rose and Piche to place top eight in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Piche, Ferrari, Garside, Macy Mullen and Maxeen Mullen will be competing along with Loureiro Kent at the upcoming Swim Ontario summer festival championships at the Pan Am pool in Unionville.
