Authors to appear at Lakefield Literary Festival

The Lakefield Literary Festival is a celebratio­n of local talent and history. This year, the 23rd annual festival will be on July 14, 15 and 16. Highlights include Writer’s Craft Talks, Sir John’s Picnic, Lakefield Literary Historical Walk, and the free Children’s Tent Event.

Lakefield Trail committee

The Lakefield Trail Committee is having its annual Family Paddle Day in celebratio­n of Internatio­nal Canoe Day, and this year they are also celebratin­g Canada’s 150th birthday. The event is on Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Lakefield Beach, 64 Hague Blvd. in Lakefield. You can bring your own canoe or kayak, or you can test one provided by Adventure Outfitters.

Lakefield Legion

Lakefield Legion Branch 77 invites all to attend a Canada Day party on July 1 beginning at 1 p.m. It will be an afternoon of karaoke music with George, and the Lakefield Lions will be there with their food truck. Call 705 652-7988 for more informatio­n.

Christ Church Community Museum

Christ Church Community Museum will be open every afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. starting on July 1. There are displays on the 100th Anniversar­y of Vimy Ridge and the Battle of Hill 70. The life and work of Margaret Laurence will be featured with a special display, and the collection of identified wild bird eggs will be on view. Samuel Strickland and his family will also be featured, and there are four short DVDs to watch on early days in Lakefield, as well as a DVD on the restoratio­n of Christ Church. Selwyn Public Library

Selwyn Public Library’s Joan Macdonald, CEO and Chief Librarian, is retiring this year. All are welcome to join in a public celebratio­n from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 14 at the Bridgenort­h Community Centre, 836 Charles Street in Bridgenort­h. Presentati­ons will be at 2:30 p.m. and refreshmen­ts will be served.

Registrati­on is now open for the Selwyn Public Library TD Summer Reading Club. This year’s program theme is to celebrate all things Canada, in honour of the sesquicent­ennial. Weekly programs for children will run from July 4 to August 17 at all three branches. The Lakefield program is Tuesdays, and Bridgenort­h meets on Wednesdays, and Ennis more meet son Thurs days. The times for all three locations are the same: Ages 4-6 meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and ages 7-10 meet from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Phone the branch where the program takes place to register.

Ennismore Horticultu­ral Society

Members of the Ennismore and District Horticultu­ral Society recently spent a weekend building a dry-stone wall tree. It is at the Robert E. Young Recreation Complex in Ennismore, and not one drop of cement was used. John Shaw Remmington instructed the group and members of the society and community all pitched in.

Fowler’s Corners Lions Club

The Fowler’s Corners Lions Club will be selling fireworks starting on Tuesday until July 3 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Coffee Time at Fowler’s Corners.
