Keene to fete Canada’s 150th with parade and more

Keene has a terrific parade every July 1, but this year is very special as the 150th birthday of our nation will be celebrated.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and winds up at the fire station on Third Street for hotdogs, cake and a rousing rendition of O’ Canada. On the same day you can also enjoy and participat­e with these activities:

Keene Farmers’ Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Third St. near the baseball field.

Bike Decorating Contest, North Shore School, 9:30 a.m.

OSM Food Cupboard, gathering donations along the route and at the fire station.

Zoo to You

Critters are coming to the Keene Library, thanks to the Friends of the OSM Library, the Bailieboro Boutique and Two Small Rooms. Zoo To You is a travelling display of exotic animals and will be at the library July 12 at 10 a.m. It is for all ages and free, but space is limited so you should register to book your spot. Call 295-6814.

Reminders

OSM Historical meeting, featuring postcards of local interest, June 27, 7:30 p.m. Keene library. Bring your own for Show and Tell.

July 1 is the deadline for graduating OSM students to apply for one of two scholarshi­ps sponsored by the Keene Lions. Applicatio­ns are available at guidance offices.

A farmer’s diary

John Graham Weir was born in Otonabee Township in 1844 and kept daily journals from 1880 until 1925. He married Lovina Tennyson in Peterborou­gh on January 1, 1867. The journals are at Trent Valley Archives.
