The Peterborough MinCom Kawartha Lakes Realty Jr. C Lakers lost the first game of the second round, falling 15-12 to the Cornwall Celtics on Sunday.

Mike Robinson scored four goals, Cal Davis two and Trent Larock, Kyle Nelson, Matt Currie, Adam Churchill, Jayd Killingbeck and Travis Ferguson each had lone markers.

The loss followed beating the Gloucester Griffins back-to-back in order to advance to the next round, a best-of-five.

The Jr. C Lakers defeated the Griffins 13-2 in Game 2 at Kinsmen Civic Centre Saturday night, winning the best-of-three series.

Peterborough beat the Griffins 14-4 Friday night in Gloucester during Game 1.

Davis, Riley Caldwell, Robinson and Colin Brown each scored a goal during the first period against the Griffins Saturday.

Caldwell scored two goals during the second period and Davis and Robinson each put in another along with Brody McBain. Ferguson dropped two in the net in the third, with one more each by Caldwell and Robinson. Although they defeated the Griffins by a landslide during both games in the regular season, Nelson, a Jr. C Lakers defenseman, said there are no guarantees in the playoffs.

“You’ve always got to play every game to win it,” said Nelson, 19.

Teammate Matt Adamo said he thinks his team is excited to move onto the next round against Cornwall.

“We know it’s going to be tough… it’s going to be a gritty series,” said Adamo, 19.

Jr. C Lakers head coach Dave Baker said his team knew what to expect going up against the Griffins in the playoffs, calling the series a “practice round.”

“Now it gets down to the nittygritty and some tough lacrosse coming up against Cornwall,” Baker said.

The coach said it usually boils down to Peterborough and Clarington in the playoffs in the OJCLL East Division.

That’s what he’s expecting this year, but with some tougher competition in the end from the West Division if his team moves on.

“The west is playing a lot better than they have been the last couple of years,” said Baker.
