Lakers get revenge

The Peterborou­gh Century 21 Lakers exacted some revenge on the Cobourg Kodiaks on Sunday night with an 11-7 win at the Cobourg Community Centre. The Kodiaks won 8-7 the last time the teams met, in Peterborou­gh. A six-goal run between the 10-minute mark of the first and second periods was the difference for the Lakers, who played well on defense in front of 1,234 fans, at least half of them cheering for Peterborou­gh. Holden Cattoni led the Lakers with a hat trick and a pair of assists. Curtis Dickson and Adam Jones had two goals and two assists each. Evan Kirk was solid in net and got the best of former Laker Kevin Croswell in the Cobourg goal. Luke Laszkiewic­z and Dan Keane had a pair of goals each for the Kodiaks, who are in Oakville tomorrow night. The Lakers return home this coming Thursday, July 13 to host the Brooklin Redmen.

Next week marks Kawartha Downs’ anniversar­y as the track marks 45 years of live harness racing. It’s also Bring A Friend night when regular patrons are encouraged to bring someone to the track who has never been before. Post time is 7 p.m. at the Innisfil Recreation Centre, giving them 12 points (five wins, 13 losses, two ties) for 10th place in the OJALL standings. The top eight teams make the playoffs. The Barrie Lakeshores finished 11th (last) with a record of 3-15-1. Kyle Killen and Max Yarranton each had three goals, Nick Finlay had two while Jake Fox, Taite Cattoni and Brad Lyons each had one. Fox added five assists, Cattoni four and Drew Hutchison two. Mitch Ogilvie, Garret Eddy, Dan Challice and Killen each had single helpers. Hutchison made 10 saves in 28 minutes of play, while fellow goaltender Brett Lafonte made seven over 40 minutes. Fox, the team leader with 74 points (34 goals, 40 assists) was unsuccessf­ul on a penalty shot after overtime. Killen finished second in team scoring with 34 goals and 20 assists for 54 points.
